Pilot Manufacturing

From laboratory formulation to manufacturable product.

Commercially representative pilot batches with validated processes and a full technology-transfer package — so you know your product can be made, safely, before you commit to scale.

Guires Pet Nutrition Lab

Pilot Batches & Technology Transfer from Guires PNL

A recipe that works on the bench does not always work on a production line. Pilot manufacturing makes the product at a commercially representative scale, so processing behaviour, texture, shelf life and cost can be checked before a brand commits to full production runs.

Our pilot work runs through Guires Manufacturing and GMP-certified partner facilities for wet, treat and supplement formats. Each pilot ends with a technology-transfer package — process parameters, specifications and batch records — so your chosen manufacturer can reproduce the product consistently.

Retort Validation

Commercial sterility, proven.

  • Temperature-distribution studies to map the retort
  • Heat-penetration studies at the product’s slowest-heating point (cold spot)
  • Process designed to at least a botulinum cook (12D, about F0 3 minutes)
  • Incubation and commercial-sterility checks on pilot product
  • Process schedule and records for your food safety plan
Treats, Chews & Raw

Kill steps that stand up to audit.

  • Heat treatment designed to reach the required core temperature throughout
  • Validation with a surrogate organism where live pathogens cannot be used
  • Separate pathogen control for dried and freeze-dried products — drying alone is not a kill step
  • HPP validated recipe by recipe
  • Target water activity and packaging to keep treats stable
Market Requirements

Process and facility requirements for each market. Last reviewed: September 2026.

MarketProcess requirementFacility and validation
United StatesCanned pet food must follow FDA low-acid canned food regulations (21 CFR 113)Process preventive controls validated by or under a PCQI (21 CFR 507.47); facilities must register with FDA unless exempt

What the Research Shows

Why processing must be validated.

Peer-reviewed studies show what processing does to nutrients and pathogens — and why pilot data matters.

Peer-reviewed evidenceProcessing & scale-up · 1 source

Retorting destroys thiamin

Retorting cut thiamin in canned cat food by 30.4%, whatever the container; time to reach target lethality ranged from 29.5 to 45.6 minutes by pack size.
What we do

Vitamins are measured after processing, and heat penetration is studied for each pack format.

Heat reduces usable protein

In moist canned cat foods, on average 48.6% of lysine had undergone early Maillard reaction.
What we do

Processing losses are allowed for in the formula and checked on pilot product.

Recontamination after the kill step

Salmonella stayed detectable on dry pet food for 19 months; E. faecium is a conservative surrogate for validating heat steps.
What we do

Kill steps are validated with surrogates where needed, and post-process hygiene is part of the transfer package.

Drying is not a kill step

13 of 84 dried-meat dog treats bought in the UK carried Salmonella; air- and freeze-dried treats had no cooking step.
What we do

Dried and freeze-dried treats get a separate, validated pathogen control.

HPP works — per recipe

HPP at 586 MPa achieved 5-log reductions of Salmonella and STEC in raw pet food, but Listeria was more resistant and results depended on the formula.
What we do

Each HPP recipe is validated individually.

Why validation matters

Of 3,691 US pet food recalls from 2003 to 2022, Salmonella caused 23% and chemical causes 32%.
What we do

Pilot trials generate the validation data your food safety plan needs before launch.

Quality
FAQs

Pilot questions.

Do you run extrusion (dry kibble) pilots?

Not in our pilot plant. We formulate and test extruded products and advise on extrusion trials at a suitable partner facility.

What is the minimum pilot batch?

Pilot batch sizes depend on the format and the facility, and are confirmed in your proposal.

Can I supply my own ingredients or packaging?

Yes, provided they meet the agreed specifications.

What happens if a pilot trial does not work?

We review the data with you, adjust the formula or process, and agree whether to re-run. Any re-run is agreed and quoted with you before it starts.

Who owns the process data?

Ownership of formulations, process data and the transfer package is agreed in the contract, and we are happy to sign a mutual NDA before you share details. Clients own their project data.

Can pilot product be sold?

Pilot product is intended for testing, sampling and buyer presentations. Selling it depends on the producing facility’s registrations and approvals for your market.
