Palatability & Feeding Studies · Palatability Testing

Palatability testing, designed to answer your question.

One-bowl acceptance and two-bowl preference tests with partner expert panels across India — designed, analysed and reported to published methods.

Guires Pet Nutrition Lab

Pet Food Palatability Testing from Guires PNL

Palatability decides whether a product is eaten, repurchased and recommended. But different test designs answer different questions: a one-bowl test shows acceptance, a two-bowl test shows preference, and neither substitutes for the other.

We run palatability tests with partner expert panels across India, covering breed, size and age bands, with animals rotated as regulatory standards require. Studies are approved by an independent ethics committee, sized by power analysis and analysed with the right statistics.

Study Designs

Palatability Testing we run.

Designs follow published methods and are chosen to answer your question with the fewest animals.

One-bowl acceptance

Intake and acceptance of a single product — the right test for treats, wet food and supplements.

Two-bowl preference

Side-by-side choice between two products, with bowl positions alternated to control side bias.

Benchmark comparisons

Your product against a market leader or your current formula.

Reformulation checks

Confirming that a cost, ingredient or supplier change has not reduced appeal.

Cat-specific protocols

Small meals, novelty control and feline taste biology built into the design.

Owner perception

Owner impressions of appearance and aroma collected separately from measured intake.

Scientific Challenges

What we solve for.

01

Choosing the right design

One-bowl tests cannot show preference; two-bowl tests need side-bias control.

02

Panel size

Too few animals gives results that cannot be trusted; panel size is set by power analysis.

03

Panel vs home

Kennel panels and homes can disagree, especially for dry and semi-moist foods.

04

Cats are different

Cats are more selective and respond to umami, not sweetness.

One bowl cannot show preference

A one-bowl test does not yield information about preference, and two-bowl tests are prone to side bias unless bowl positions are alternated.
What we do

We pick the design that answers your question and control side bias in every two-bowl test.

Panel size decides reliability

Expert panels of about 30 animals and in-home panels of about 100 are reported as typical; for cats, two-bowl tests need at least 23 animals for adequate power.
What we do

Panel size and test length are set by power analysis, not habit.

Cats need their own protocols

Cats are more selective than dogs, lack a functional sweet receptor, and umami from nucleotides is their main appetitive taste.
What we do

Cat studies are designed around small meals, novelty and feline taste biology.

Palatants and ingredients that drive acceptance

Palatability results feed straight back into formulation — palatant choice, protein source, fat coating and texture are adjusted from what the panel tells us.
