Guires Pet Nutrition Lab

Pet Food Formulation from Guires PNL

Formulation turns nutritional targets into a recipe. A complete pet food has to meet dozens of nutrient minimums and maximums at the same time, balanced to its energy content, while also working with the ingredients available, the process it goes through and the price it must sell at.

We formulate from species and life-stage requirements first, using recognised nutrient profiles for your target market. Energy is calculated from the recipe, nutrient levels are checked against every limit, and prototypes are verified by laboratory analysis — whether you are starting a new product, reformulating an existing one or matching a benchmark.

How We Formulate

The science behind every recipe.

Twelve principles drawn from peer-reviewed research and current guidelines. Each one closes a gap that published studies keep finding in commercial pet food.

Research + guidanceFormulation science · 3 sources

Balanced on energy, not weight

Nutrient profiles are set per 1000 kcal of metabolisable energy (ME). Standard ME equations can misjudge modern foods — one study of 451 foods found errors of 8–12% for wet foods.
What we do

We balance every formula per 1000 kcal ME and calculate energy with the method each market specifies, using analysed nutrient values so the calculation reflects the actual recipe.

Minimums and maximums

Excess matters as much as deficiency. In 2018–19, formulation errors led to US dog food recalls with vitamin D at up to about 70 times the intended level.
What we do

Every formula is checked against FEDIAF nutritional maximums and EU/UK legal additive limits (e.g. vitamin D 2,000 IU/kg, zinc 200 mg/kg), and premix inclusion is double-checked.

Processing losses

Vitamins A, D, E, K, C and folic acid are the least stable in extrusion; one study lost about 26% of vitamin A at preconditioning and about 34% after extrusion and drying.
What we do

Vitamin overages are set from published retention data for your process and confirmed by analysing the finished product.

Available amino acids

Heat processing reduces usable lysine; in commercial foods reactive lysine fell as low as 67% of total lysine.
What we do

Protein and amino-acid targets allow for processing losses, especially in growth formulas.

Species-specific needs

Cats need dietary taurine, and taurine status matters in dogs fed pulse-heavy or grain-free diets.
What we do

We check taurine and sulphur amino acids in every cat formula and in pulse-rich dog formulas.

Life stage and size

AAFCO caps calcium at 1.8% of dry matter for foods fed to puppies expected to exceed 70 lb, as excess calcium disturbs skeletal development in giant breeds.
What we do

Large-breed growth formulas keep calcium, phosphorus and energy within tighter ranges.

Fibre, measured properly

Crude fibre on labels underestimates fibre; total dietary fibre predicts energy digestibility better.
What we do

Fibre systems are designed on total dietary fibre, soluble and insoluble, not crude fibre alone.

Real ingredient composition

Raw materials vary: in 200 samples of one poultry meal, ash varied by about 20%.
What we do

Formulas use analysed raw-material values, not book values, with specifications for each supplier.

Verified, not assumed

Only 6% of wet and 38% of dry UK foods met all FEDIAF mineral guidelines (2017); in 2025 none of 31 UK dry dog foods met every guideline.
What we do

Every formula is verified by laboratory analysis of the finished product against its targets.

Label integrity

DNA studies keep finding undeclared species — 23 of 40 novel-protein and hydrolysed diets in one study.
What we do

For single-protein and novel-protein products we specify single-source raw materials, require supplier declarations and design out cross-contact in the recipe and process.

Plant-based formulas

Nutrient inadequacies are common in both vegan and meat-based foods; a 2026 review of 54 studies found them in 81.5% of foods examined.
What we do

Plant-based recipes get specific checks on amino acids, taurine, iodine and minerals from the start.

Feeding guides that work

Energy needs vary widely: adult dogs ranged from about 55 to 441 kcal/kg0.75 per day. WSAVA advises treats stay under 10% of daily calories.
What we do

Feeding guides start from evidence-based ranges and tell owners to adjust to body condition; treat guides respect the 10% rule.

Formats

Formulated for the way it’s made.

Each format brings its own formulation risks. We design for them from the first draft.

Dry / extruded

Starch gelatinization, kibble integrity, fat coating and vitamin overages for extrusion.

Wet / retort

Moisture, texture and gravy stability, and nutrient losses under retort conditions.

Fresh & raw

Pathogen control and kill-step (thermal or HPP) built into the recipe.

Treats

Target water activity (semi-moist products often 0.60–0.85), mould control and the 10% calorie guide.

Supplements

Dose per serving, active stability, acceptance and claims boundaries.

Markets

Compliance built into the recipe.

The same product can need different nutrient references, limits and label content in each market.

FAQs

Formulation questions.

Which nutrient standards do you formulate to?

AAFCO for the US, FEDIAF 2025 for the EU and UK, and IS 11968:2019 for India, plus legal additive limits in each market. For Australia we formulate to AAFCO or FEDIAF, as agreed.

Can you guarantee my product meets AAFCO or FEDIAF?

We formulate to the chosen profile and verify by analysing the finished product. A nutritional adequacy claim can be supported by formulation or by feeding trials, which we can also run.

Can you work from my existing recipe or a competitor product?

Yes. We can optimise your recipe, or analyse a benchmark product and develop your own formula to match or beat it.

Do you formulate plant-based, raw or grain-free products?

Yes, with the extra checks each needs: amino acids and minerals for plant-based, pathogen control for raw, and taurine and pulse levels for grain-free.

Who formulates my product?

Your project team and their qualifications are introduced by name in your proposal.

How long does a formulation take, and who owns it?

It depends on scope; you receive a timeline with your proposal. IP ownership is agreed in the contract before work starts. A new formulation typically takes 6–12 weeks from brief to verified prototype. Clients own their project data, and formula ownership is agreed in the contract before work begins.
