Testing & Validation · Nutritional Analysis

Nutritional analysis, interpreted against your targets.

Proximate, mineral, vitamin, amino-acid and fatty-acid analysis that verifies what your label declares — reviewed by our nutrition team, not just reported.

Guires Pet Nutrition Lab

Pet Food Nutritional Analysis from Guires PNL

A guaranteed analysis is a promise to regulators, retailers and pet owners. Ingredients vary with source and season, and processing changes moisture and nutrient levels, so a recipe that is correct on paper can drift once it is made.

We verify declared values analytically through Guires Analytical Lab and qualified partner laboratories, then interpret every result against your nutrient targets and the tolerances of your market. Energy is calculated from analysed proximate values using the method each market requires.

What We Test

Nutritional Analysis scope.

Each test is chosen for a reason — the stage of development, the format and the rules in your market.

Proximate analysis

Moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre and ash — the basis of every guaranteed analysis and of the energy calculation.

Minerals & trace elements

Calcium, phosphorus and their ratio, plus sodium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron and other trace minerals.

Vitamins

Fat- and water-soluble vitamins, including heat-sensitive thiamine and vitamin A, measured in the finished product.

Amino acids

Essential amino acids (see protein analysis), taurine for cat foods and available lysine where heat processing is a concern.

Fatty acids

Omega-6 and omega-3 profiles, including EPA and DHA, verified against label and functional claims.

Calculated energy

Metabolisable energy calculated from analysed values with modified Atwater factors or NRC 2006 equations, as each market requires.

Scientific Challenges

What we solve for.

01

Label accuracy

Declared values must hold within the tolerances regulators apply, batch after batch.

02

Processing losses

Extrusion, retort and storage reduce sensitive vitamins, so analysis is done on finished product, not on the recipe.

03

Nutrient ratios

Calcium-to-phosphorus and omega-6-to-omega-3 ratios matter as much as single values.

04

Energy basis

Nutrient profiles are set per 1000 kcal, so an inaccurate energy value distorts every check.

Labels are not always accurate

In a 2026 study, 82.3% of 96 products met their declared guaranteed analysis — so nearly 1 in 5 did not.
What we do

Every guarantee verified analytically before launch, with results checked against market tolerances.

Thiamine is lost in processing and storage

Canned cat food lost 17.8% of added thiamine over six months; thiamine deficiency outbreaks have been linked to low-thiamine cat food.
What we do

Thiamine measured in finished product and during storage, not only assumed from the formula.

Heat reduces usable protein

In moist canned cat foods, on average 48.6% of lysine had undergone early Maillard reaction.
What we do

Processing losses are allowed for in the formula and checked on pilot product.

FAQs

Common questions.

Do you measure metabolisable energy?

No. We calculate energy from analysed proximate values using the method each market requires; we do not run feeding studies or bomb calorimetry for energy.

Who runs the analyses?

Analyses run through Guires Analytical Lab and qualified partner laboratories; our nutrition team reviews and interprets every result.

How often should products be tested?

At launch, after any change of supplier, recipe or process, and on a routine schedule agreed with you.

FEDIAFAAFCO

Every Guires PNL product is formulated to comply with the FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines and the AAFCO Dog and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles. Neither body issues certificates to manufacturers, so compliance is verified independently against their published standards — and every product comes with a complete documentation package for regulatory submissions in the EU, US, Australia and Asian markets.
