Key takeaways
  • Decide the pet, format, market and claims before you formulate.
  • Plan testing and safety validation early — they set your timeline.
  • Nutritional adequacy is proven by formulation to a profile or by a feeding trial.
  • A pilot batch proves the product can be made before you commit to scale.

01The 10 steps

  1. Step 1
Define the product. Species, life stage, format, price point and the benefit you want to offer.
  2. Step 2
Check the market. Competitor products, gaps and what owners want.
  3. Step 3
Choose your markets. Each market’s rules shape the recipe, label and tests.
  4. Step 4
Set nutrition targets. Formulate to AAFCO or FEDIAF profiles, or plan a feeding trial.
  5. Step 5
Formulate and cost. A recipe that meets targets at a price that works. See pet food formulation services.
  6. Step 6
Make prototypes. Bench samples to review taste, texture and appearance.
  7. Step 7
Test. Nutrients, safety and palatability — and shelf life.
  8. Step 8
Pilot batch. Prove the product can be made at scale, through pilot manufacturing.
  9. Step 9
Label and claims. Artwork, nutrient declarations and claim evidence.
  10. Step 10
Launch. Technology transfer to a manufacturer and a supply plan. See commercial scale-up.

02Proving “complete and balanced”

In the US, a complete and balanced claim is substantiated either by formulating to an AAFCO nutrient profile or by passing an AAFCO feeding trial; the adult maintenance trial runs at least 26 weeks 1. In Europe and the UK, products are formulated to the FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines 2. Decide your route early — it changes both cost and timeline.

03Common mistakes to avoid

Plan for

  • Testing and shelf-life time in the schedule.
  • Market-specific labels from the start.
  • Supplier documentation for every ingredient.
  • A backup supplier for key ingredients.

Avoid

  • Choosing packaging before shelf-life testing.
  • Disease claims on a food product.
  • Launching in several markets with one label.
  • Skipping a pilot batch.

Decide the product, markets and claims before you formulate — and never skip the pilot batch.

05Questions brands ask

How long does a launch take?

It depends on the format, markets and testing. A formulation-route product is typically months; an AAFCO feeding trial adds at least 26 weeks.

Do I need my own factory?

No. Many brands launch through contract manufacturers; we prepare the technology-transfer package.
